The Pursuit of God

"O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more. I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God, the Triune God, I want to want Thee; I long to be filled with longing; I thirst to be made more thirsty still. Show me Thy glory, I pray Thee, that so I may know Thee indeed. Begin in mercy a new work of love within me. Say to my soul, “Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.” Then give me grace to rise and follow Thee up from this misty lowland where I have wandered so long. In Jesus’ name, Amen"
This prayer is from a book I have been rereading, a classic by A.W. Towzer entitled "The Pursuit of God". It really strikes a chord in me. The line “I am painfully conscious of my need of further grace. I am ashamed of my lack of desire. O God,” It is so true – this is Romans 7 stuff. And yet I am equally moved by the comments, "Say to my soul, “Rise up,… and come away.” Then give me grace to rise and follow”. The reality is when I am “doing good” you know all the things like spending time in God’s word, thinking more of others and less of myself, loving my wife and kids, and flossing regularly. I am doing it because God has given me the power - he has given me the grace to follow.

I wonder if the Holy Spirit who can interceed for us, makes my feeble attempts of a similar prayer sound so lovely in the ears of our Lord? I sure hope so.
